Education and Outreach

Oroville Elementary School

For the last few years CCFEG has partnered with the Oroville Elementary School and worked with a 5th grade class to provide fisheries education in the classroom, as well as support fisheries education field trips. Funding was provided to OES to assist with transportation costs associated with visiting a local dam and picking up the fish eggs that are used in the classroom. The students grow fish in the classroom, observe their growth, and then release the fish into the wild. This partnership and program provide education and outreach that might not otherwise we obtained.

Tonasket Elementary School

CCFEG has partnered with the Tonasket Elementary School and worked with a 3rd grade class to provide fisheries education in the classroom. Supplies were provided for the students to grow fish in the classroom, observe their growth, and then release the fish into the wild. The students also learned about water quality and hardness through the US Forest Service on a field trip to a local stream where they were able to perform water quality tests hands on. This partnership and program provide education and outreach that might not otherwise we obtained.

Methow Valley Salmon Celebration

In 2011, CCFEG participated in and was a sponsor of the first annual Methow Valley Salmon Celebration.  The Salmon Celebration is a free event which honors the teamwork and community support involved in restoring the salmon to the Methow.  During the day CCFEG staff showed visitors the importance of riparian health to steady salmon runs through an interactive watershed simulation activity.  CCFEG also ran an educational booth during the evening portion of the event.

Wenatchee River Salmon Festival

The Salmon Festival, or Salmonfest, is an outdoor education event that connects youth and families to nature in a fun and entertaining way by helping them learn about our natural resources and the incredible environment in which we live.  CCFEG assiss in a number of educational programs at Salmonfest, including the Kids in the Creek field program and Rolling River watershed display, and also runs an education and outreach booth.

In 2009 the CCFEG was able to partner with the Colville Confederated Tribes (CCT) to provide a cost share funding opportunity for several school districts to attend Salmonfest. Those districts were able to have the transportation costs for the students covered by CCFEG and CCT. Tonasket Elementary School, Oroville Elementary School, and the Pascal Sherman Indian School benefited from this partnership.
